The preschool and recreation coaches work hard to accommodate children with a variety of strengths and abilities. The preschool program is designed to enhance coordination, listening skills while introducing and reinforcing the fundamental skills of gymnastics. We accomplish this strategy through engaging children in our well-planned circuits and lesson plans.
The recreation program begins with a large group warm up, after which they move to their first apparatus and will start their skill development based on specific required skill sets that supports each individual child up for success. Our qualified coaches take the leadership of introducing more advanced skills as each individual child progresses through the program. Not every child advance at the same time on the same apparatus and it is important to not compare your child’s skills with another.
Yes! Our developmental, competitive program known as the LTAD Program (Long-Term Athlete Development) provides Cochrane and the surrounding community with gymnastic programs, that future gymnasts can strive to be a part of, focusing on technique, skill development, confidence, and the life skills that are learned along the way; most importantly, have fun!
The UCalgary Cochrane Gymnastic LTAD programs are intended to provide athletes an opportunity to participate in events such as Fun Meets, Performances, Training Camps and Competitions when they arise but are not guaranteed. Additional to providing gymnastics program we build life skills that are earned through hard work and dedication. These programs offer opportunity, encourage growth, and personal success while building strength, flexibility and technical training. Many of these athletes continue with us in our C.I.T. Program (Coach in Training Program) to share their knowledge and passion with others in our sport.
Our coaches are happy to accommodate children that may require a little additional support in their learning as we understand and appreciate that everyone and their circumstances are different. We are not able to provide additional persons to help support individual children currently. As gymnastics is a high risk sport, there are certain behaviour expectations that children must be able to demonstrate to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
Children that may require one on one support that have those resources are welcome to participate in the program however arrangements must be made in advance of registering so that we can review our safety standards and that our program is a good fit for you and your family. Please email cochranegym@ucalgary.ca for more information.
We also have a fantastic adaptive program at the main campus in Calgary that we encourage you to check out.
It is important to communicate with your coach directly if you have any questions or concerns as they are the first and best resource to help support your questions. This can be done before or after class. We also have onsite supervisors that are often available to help give guidance to your questions in an effort to provide more information if required.
