Tips for visiting Active Living

Masks must be worn in common areas of UCalgary. Read the mask policy here.   Change rooms and locker rooms are not available. Exceptions are made for Aquatic Centre programs that may access the change rooms (showers are closed). Drop-in opportunities are not available.  Bring your own water bottle – while you can fill your bottle, water fountains are not available. When you register for a program, we will supply you with new safety guidelines. Please review them carefully prior to your visit.

From pre-school to experienced, and ages 2- 80+, our gymnastics program truly has something for everyone. Serving both Calgary and surrounding communities, we have two locations to serve you better.

The University of Calgary Gymnastics Centre is located in the basement of the Kinesiology B complex. We offer a variety of circuit-based gymnastics programs for pre-school and recreational participants ages 2+.

Our facility runs pre-school and recreational rhythmic gymnastics for ages 4+ in studios in the Kinesiology complex.

Our secondary gym located at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre in Cochrane is just a 15-minute drive from Northwest Calgary. 

Kids and youth programs come with free parking included during the time of the sessions.

Preschool Gymnastics - Calgary

Our Calgary-based preschool program is written specifically for our facility. We teach the Dominant Movement Patterns of gymnastics (landings, rotations, springs, statics and swings) through the use of circuits. We base our circuits upon research into how children’s minds and bodies develop. Through the sport of gymnastics, participants will develop the skills and confidence to succeed in a variety of areas outside the gym walls.

NO Cell phone use is permitted within the Gymnastics Centre during class time.

Gymnatots | Ages 2-3

Gymnatots is the first step in the preschool program. Designed to lay a strong foundation in basic gymnastics, Gymnatots is beneficial for any future sports your child may participate in.

Parented Class
One parent/adult (age 18+) is required to attend and assist the child during the duration of the class. If you want to register twins or triplets with a single adult, please contact 403.220.7010.

Prerequisite: No experience required, Ages 2-3

Supertots | Ages 3+

This parented program is the next step up from our Gymnatot program. In the Supertot class, the children are now ready to focus on the combining of basic skills and development of their self-confidence and independence on the equipment.

Parented Class

UNPARENTED CLASSES | Please note: Children in Grade 1+ are not eligible for our preschool programs. Please register in the Home School or Recreational programs.

Kindergym | Ages 4-6

Kindergym is the first step in the unparented preschool program. Designed to lay a strong foundation in basic gymnastics, Kindergym is beneficial for any future sports your child may participate in.

Unparented Class

Prerequisite: No experience required

Children must be turning 4 years of age within the first 4 weeks of the program or receive coach recommendation to register. If coming from another gym, please contact 403.220.7010 for appropriate level recommendation.

Kindercracker | Ages 4-6

Kindercracker is the next level up from Kindergym. This level encourages children to become more independent and to attempt and perform skills with minimal assistance from the coach.

Firecracker | Ages 4-6

Firecracker is the next level up from Kindercracker. The child will continue to be challenged with more complex skills as well as learning how to practice independently. This program is for children with previous Kindercracker experience.

Supercracker | Ages 4-6

Supercracker is the next step up from Firecracker. Participants will build upon the complexity of skills they have gained from the Firecracker program.

This program is only offered during select sessions.

Recreational Gymnastics - Calgary | Grades 1-12

Our Calgary based recreational program is written specifically for our facility. We teach the Dominant Movement Patterns of gymnastics (landings, rotations, springs, statics and swings) through the use of circuits. Our recreational program is appropriate for individuals of all ages and abilities.

Classes are divided based on school grades, allowing children to participate in programs with their peers. Each grade is further divided into Beginner, Experienced and Advanced levels, which are based on each individual’s current skill level. Grades 1-6 are co-ed. Grades 7+ are female only.

Example: Grade 2 in school + New to gymnastics = Grade 2 Beginner

Classes may be combined with similar skill levels/age groups, dependent on registration numbers.

Recreation Beginner | Grades 1-6

Expanded from our Preschool program, the Recreational program focuses on skill progressions and active movement. Developing a base in gymnastics will provide participants with a foundation to pursue a variety of other sports and activities outside the gym walls.

Prerequisite: No recreational experience required (Grade 1-6) this includes participants entering from a preschool program.

Participants who have completed previous recreational classes and need to gain additional confidence on equipment and in foundational skills.

Register for Recreation Beginner | Grades 1-6

Recreation Experienced | Grades 1-6

Recreational Experiences is our next level up from Beginner. This level encourages participants to become more independent and to attempt and perform skills with minimal assistance from the coach. Participants will continue to gain confidence on all equipment and build upon their fundamental skills through repetition across various circuits.

Prerequisite: Entry is by coach's recommendation only. If coming from another gym, please contact 403.220.7010 for appropriate level recommendation.

and

Participants who have completed previous recreational classes and need to gain additional confidence, independence and skills.

Register for Recreation Experienced | Grades 1-6

Recreation Advanced | Grades 1-6

Recreational Advanced is our next level up from Experienced. Participants will continue to be challenged with more complex skills as well as learning how to practice independently. Through circuits and drills, participants will continue to gain independence on all equipment and build upon their fundamental skills through repetition. Skill progression will be based upon their coach’s assessment of the individual’s abilities and readiness.

This level is further split into A (1hr) and B (2hr) programming. B programming is only offered during select sessions.

Continuing Recreation | Grades 7-12

Our Continuing rec programming follows our Grade 1-6 lesson progressions. Lesson plans are modified by coaches to challenge each individual. Classes combine participants from a variety of levels, allowing gymnasts to work within their peer group.

Classes may be divided during training time to focus on specific ability-based skills.

Programs range from 1 – 1 ½ hours during select sessions.

Prerequisite: No experience required.  Must be in Grade 7-12 at beginning of the program to register.

Home School Gymnastics - Calgary


Home School Gymnastics Program| Grade 1-3

Our Calgary based homeschool program is written specifically for our facility. We teach the Dominant Movement Patterns of gymnastics (landings, rotations, springs, statics and swings) through the use of circuits. This gymnastics program takes place during the daytime hours to align with home-school schedules.

Classes are divided based on school grade, allowing children to participate in programs with their peers. Each grade is further divided into Beginner and Experienced levels, which are based on each individual’s current skill level. All classes are co-ed.

• Beginner: New to gymnastics

• Experienced: Entry by coach's recommendation

• Advanced: ONLY offered during evening/weekend recreational times

Example: Grade 2 in home-school + New to gymnastics = Homeschool Grade 2 Beginner

Adaptive Gymnastics - Calgary | Ages 4+


Adaptive Gymnastics | Ages 4-6

Open only to children with special needs requiring 1:1 coaching, this program is designed to introduce children with special needs to the sport of artistic gymnastics. Children will participate in our circuit-based preschool and recreational programs in an environment that is conducive to their learning and development. Our coaches will make adaptations and personalized modifications to our circuits to meet each child where they are at and assist them in working towards their own personal best as a gymnast.

A coach will be provided for each child; all parents/aids are asked to remain in the hallway during class.

Adaptive Gymnastics | Grade 1+

This exciting 45-minute program is designed to introduce children with special needs to the sport of artistic gymnastics. Our preschool programs are designed to lay a strong foundation in basic gymnastics which is beneficial for any future sports children may participate in.

Rhythmic Gymnastics - Calgary | Ages 4+

Rhythmic Gymnastics combines elements of ballet and dance with gymnastics skills. Participants will use rhythmic apparatus including ribbon, ball, hoop, rope and scarves. Your child will coordinate body movements with music through dance, games, choreographed routines and apparatus manipulation.

Please note, our participants are primarily female but boys are welcome to join as well.

All classes are unparented. Classes are performance based; each class will learn a group routine each session/year.

KinderRhythmic | Ages 4-6

KinderRhythmic is the first step in our rhythmic preschool program. Designed to lay a strong foundation in basic rhythmic gymnastics, participants will increase body awareness, creative expression and flexibility in coordination with apparatus manipulation.

Prerequisite: No experience required

Children must be turning 4 years of age within the first 4 weeks of the program or receive coach recommendation to register. If coming from another gym, please contact 403.220.7010 for appropriate level recommendation.

FireRhythmic | Ages 4-6

Rhythmic Performance Teams | Ages 7+

Junior Performance

Gymnasts will learn the basics of rhythmic gymnastics and be introduced to group chorography and apparatus manipulation.

Prerequisite: No Rhythmic experience required (Age 7+) this includes participants entering from a preschool program.

Participants who have completed previous rhythmic classes and need to gain additional confidence with equipment and in foundational skills.

Senior Performance is our next level up from Junior This level encourages participants to become more independent and to attempt and perform skills with minimal assistance from the coach. Through group and individual routines, participants will continue to gain independence with all apparatus and build upon their fundamental skills through repetition. Skill progression and individualized routines will be based upon their coach’s assessment of the individual’s abilities and readiness.

Classes vary in duration based upon the session.
